zum Cafe

Create a four panel comic strip telling the story of a group of friends going zum Imbiss that also serves ice cream. Panels can be as small as a quarter of a piece of printer paper, hence four per sheet, or as large as a full sheet of paper. In any case, each panel needs:

Colorful settings and simple representations of people interacting. Some of you like to draw and draw very well, but keep these sketches simple and neat.
At least two balloons of dialogue, with clearly and neatly rendered text.
Themes to include in your comic strip: talking about foods, ordering the food, how things taste, expressing what you want and like, polite greetings and expressions.

Use materials in the classroom to decide on a format. Markers and various sized paper, including plain printer abound. Quietly get some materials, return to your seats and with your notes and books begin your strips. Plan accordingly; you'll finish these at home and they're due tomorrow.

Write a skit in a group of 3-4. It’s the second or third week of school, and you are hanging out with some new people during die Große Pause, talking about

some of your courses.

The topic of your teachers and their eccentricities/personalities comes up,

and you agree and disagree with some of the comments being made.

Talk about the homework situation

and grades

and respond accordingly/dramatically.

Express that you know/don’t know (kennen) some of these teachers.

Talk about school in general.

Say you need to get some school supplies (ich gehe jetzt zum Schreibwarenladen),

and describe what you are buying/needing. (use accusative case!!)

Pepper your conversation with many sensible filler expressions.

Everone should have an equal number of lines.

der Akkusativ und der Nominativ

Nouns in German are in a specific case. This means that the definite or indefinite article that precedes most nouns in a sentence take on different forms depending on these two things:

The gender/number of the noun - masculine, feminine, neuter, plural
The function of the noun in the sentence

Nouns in the nominative case are always the subject of the sentence, i.e., these nouns DO the action of the verb. Every German sentence has a noun.noun phrase in the nominative

Nouns in the accusative case are almost always the direct object of the verb, i.e., these nouns are the direct recipient of the verbs action. Accusative case nouns in German almost always answer the question What? or Whom?

There are numerous verbs in German that expect or demand an accusative case object. Here is a short list of these verbs:

haben - to have

besuchen - to visit

kaufen - to buy

schreiben - to write

bringen - to bring

spielen - to play

machen - to do, make

sehen - to see

essen - to essen

trinken - to drink

In order to properly deal with the case system in German, it is crucial that you know the gender of German nouns. Always learn the nominative case form of the definite article for every noun you learn - der, die, das. These three articles indicate the gender of the noun. In the accusative case, only the masculine article der changes; it changes to den.

On a sheet of paper, display a math problem entirely in German. Use coloring pencils to "dramatize" the German numbers - written out completely. Here are the major math operations:

Now we jump into the present perfect tense, also know as the conversational past tense. This is a compound tense, meaning, there are two verb forms required to express this past tense: the helping verb - haben or sein - and the past participle. Examples:

Ich habe gestern abend nach derSchule meine Hausaufgabe gemacht.
Du hast letzten Montag Klavier gespielt.
Johann und Sara haben Musik bei Monika gehört.

Note several things: the helping verb, haben, is conjugated in the present tense and it agrees with the subject of the sentence. The helping verb is the main verb, therefore, it is always in the second position. The past participle of the verbs - machen, spielen, hören - go at the end of the sentence.

Here are some links to help you get going with this all important past tense. It is the dominant way German-speakers relate events in the past in speech.

You and a friend are sitting around the house wondering what do with your time. You make suggestions, but your friend doesn’t like any of the ideas and gives reasons why. You finally decide on seeing a movie. You want to call another friend or two and invite them. You go to his house and invite him to movies, but he says he has at least three chores to take care of. You both offer to help him. He tells you what chores to accomplish. You finish the work, and make it to the movie theater just in time.

Skit - Kleidung kaufen!

Your friend (Heiko) calls you. You chat briefly about school. He then asks if you have any plans for this afternoon (Hast du etwas vor?) You say a friend, Johann, is coming over (rüberkommen) at a certain time and that you were going to do soemthing with him. Heiko knows this person and comments on Johann's personality, sense of style, etc. Heiko then asks if you and Johann want to go shopping; he invites you to come along. You agree and you and Johann meet (treffen) Heiko in front of the store (vor dem Kaufhaus).

Heiko needs some new clothes for a party he's going to. He tries several articles of clothing and asks for your opinions. You and Johann comment and favorably and unfavorably on several items of clothes. You ask how much something is and you all comment on the price. Johann realizes suddenly he needs to go home and cut the lawn (den Rasen mähen). You and and Heiko decide to get some ice cream.

One thing that struck me, aside from the few grammatical errors, is how one responds to the question Wie geht's? You answer correctly with Es geht mir......... but then when you want to say Und you? You must say Und dir? and not und du? So here is a sample conversation:

Andreas: Hallo Bert! Wie geht es dir heute abend?
Bert: Naja, es geht mir gut, danke. Und dir?
Andreas: Es geht mir auch gut, Gott sei Dank!
Bert: Toll, das freut mich!

In this Steckbrief, you will choose a landmark in the city of Berlin. You'll visit the the website at visitberlin.de and download a picture of your assigned landmark. Then, in short phrases, facts, key words, dates, etc., you describe the significance of the landmark in the history of Berlin.

We'll pass around a lengthy list of important German landmarks, and you'll initial TWO of them you'll cover in two Steckbriefe. Write the names of your landmarks down in your notebooks. Visit the website http://www.schulweb.de/ and select a Gymnasium anywhere in Germany. Pretend you are a student at this Gymnasium, and write a short report about your imaginary school life, using information researched from the school's website. Find a school whose website gives you lots of information: subjects offered, names of teachers, and pictures. Download the pictures for use in your project.

Create a Multimedia Presentation, using something like Powerpoint or a webpage, and create slides or sections that talk about 5 different classes. Also, tell what school you go to (Ich gehe auf Albert-Einstein-Gymnasium.....) where the school is located (city and state - Bundesland), identify the principal (Schulleiter, Schuleiterin). Faculty listings can be found under links called Kollegium.

Project Summary:

Find a Gymnasium in Germany
Create a multimedia presentation outlining your imaginary life at the school
Tell what courses you have
Talk about 5 of these courses - level of difficulty, amount of homework, how you like/dislike the course, your current grade.
Adorn your project with pictures taken from the website.
Mention the principal's name, and the location of the school.

Project details: Examine the incomplete list of notable Germans throughout history. The link is above. Do some preliminary research on a few of them, ones that immediately pique your interest because of their area of contribution. Choose one famous German and write a three page paper, double spaced, 12 point font, in English, about this German's life. Discuss where he was born, his early upbringing, education, places of residence throughout career, major events in their life and their contributions to world culture. A few of the topics deal with artistic and architectural movements that originated in German-speaking countries and influenced world culture in some way. Include pictures, at least two, and a bibliography that conforms to MLA standards.

der Infinitiv - the dictionary form of the verb, not conjugated, the basic form.
der Verbalausdruck - verbal expression; an infinitive with added objects and phrases

Examples of verbal expressions:

im Internet surfen - to surf on the Internet
die Flöte jeden Tag nach der Schule spielen - to play the flute every day after school

Notice:

The German verbal expression ends with the actual verb.
The English verbal expression begins with the word "to".

In German, you create sentences with verbal expressions, remembering two things:

Word Order - conjugated verb second!! Except in yes/no questions, where the conjugated verb is first.
Conjugation of Verbs - endings are added to the stem of the verbs that agree with the subject of your sentence.

Example: CDs zu Monika bringen - a verbal expression, the infinitive is bringen
Now we create meaningful sentences with this verbal expression, adding words and phrases as desired:

Ich bringe CDs zu Monika.
Bringst du CDs zu Monika?
Johannes bringt CDs zu Monika.

Conversation drills - two teams. Everyone write down 10 phrases you might say waiting in line to get a bite to eat. The waitress might say it to you, you might say it to the waitress, or to one another. Students then share their phrases / questions, one by one. Opponent must respond appropriately.

Homework - study your notes, old homework assignments, textbook, Chapter 6, for the test tomorrow. Put together a portfolio of your best work from this unit, 5 assignments minimum, and organize them nicely in either a folder or stapled together.

We set up our little food stands. We present what we have to everyone, recording it on digital voice recorder. Then we distribute a cheat sheet of key phrases and vocabulary for interacting at a food stand.

I go around and record exchanges between people at various food stands. These will be posted at this webite over the weekend.

Each group comes up to introduce their cafe and the foods the have brought:

I take video of your presentations for web delivery.
We visit our neighbor's cafes to purchase items. Phrases to use;

Greetings / Ja, bitte? / Ich möchte . . . / Ich will ....... / Etwas zu trinken? / Bitte! / Danke! / Das ist zu teuer. / Prima! / Was isst du? / Was trinkst du? / Für mich eine Cola. / Für mich ein Wurstbrot. / Das schmeckt mir. / Das schmeckt mir nicht. / Ich habe kein Geld. / Ich habe nicht genug Geld.

These are expressions I expect you to use tomorrow as you purchase your foods. I will videotape a few transactions, at least one for everyone. Bring ice cream to room 105 for me to freeze. All drinks/cups/other food stuffs can be brought to room 209 (our German classroom) for safekeeping.

Homework:

Today we start a multiday project that will culminate on Friday with German-style food and drink. Here is what we'll do:

In Groups of 4, you design a menu on a large sheet of paper. On your menu will be food items of your choice, including drinks and ice cream, all of course in German. Your large menu will be decorated, and you will decide on a name for your cafe. You decide prices for your items, and list them on the menu. You decide who is responsible for bringing what foods on Friday, and on that day, you will set up your "Cafe" or Imbiss, and then we'll take turns buying items from your classmates' cafe. We will use play money for food and drink, and the cafe/imbiss that earns the most money wins a special prize.

All transactions must be conducted in German, of course.

For today:

Decide small groups.
Plan your menu
Begin working on menu.
Decide who is bringing what items on Friday.

There is a checklist/planning sheet that goes along with today's work.

Homework:

Read and study Chapter 6. Make a vocabulary/phrase list of things you would say in an Eiscafe or Imbiss, phrases dealing with what you want, would like. What tastes good or not good, things the waiter might say.

There were many scenes in yesterday's Abschnitt 5. Choose three exchanges, and create three different 3-panel comic strips of these scenes. Use the script I gave you yesterday for the vocabulary. Make sure you print the comic strip when you are finished. Title the comic strip; be creative. Below are the links to the comic strip creators we used before. Have fun!!! Map Project

We create a wall-size map of Central Europe from Italy, along the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea through Spain and then France, across the English Channel to the British Isles, than across the North Sea into the Danish peninsula south into Germany and the Alps of Switzerland and Austria, into eastern Austria and stopping at Hungary and Poland. Students then research the countries in Central Europe at the CIA Factbook on the Internet and create index cards for these nations, in German, that include the following keys facts:

Name - name
Hauptstadt - capital city
Sprache(n) - language, languages
Fläche - area in square kilometers
Grossstädte - large cities

We surround the map with these index cards and attach strings frm the index cards to where they are located on the map. The map is labelled large and bold, Europa, and we hang prominently in the hallway.

Today we assign the countries to students and begin preparing the map on large sheet of white paper.

Today we'll do several different things on the computer. The first thing is to create a comic strip! I have some links below for comic strip generators, explore them and choose the one you like best. Create three different comic strips, each comic strip should have three different panels. One of the comic strips should be about weather and seasons; here are some questions you can use:

Wie ist das Wetter heute?
Wie ist das Wetter in Berlin heute?
Ist es warm oder kalt heute?

The other two comic strips can involve any German that you know and like from your notebooks or previous chapters in your textbook. Here are the links for the comic strip generators:

After experimenting a bit, I think the Comic Creator is is the easiest to use. But you decide.

When completed with the comic strip assignment, do a some research on your German city of choice. Use google.com to find some information, and make a short brochure using MS Publisher. Open MS Publisher, choose a brochure template, and find some interesting information on your city. You can copy pictures from the WWW and paste them into your brochure. The kinds of information I want to see:

Population
Landmarks
Location in Germany
Some historical facts
Pictures
Things to do there

Be creative. Save your work in your home directories. Have fun!
